Ikue Mori
Recorded on 7th August, 2010 at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal.
Live Electronics
Ikue Mori moved from Tokyo to New York in 1977. She started playing drums and soon formed the seminal NO WAVE band DNA, with fellow noise pioneers Arto Lindsay and Tim Wright.
In the mid 80’s Ikue began using drum machines in the unlikely context of improvised music and forged a unique style of playing. During the 90’s she collaborated with numerous improvisers internationally while continuing to produce and record her own music. In 1998, she performed as a soloist with Ensemble Modern and was awarded a Distinction in “Digital Musics” by the Prix Ars Electronica 1999.
Further awards and commissions include the Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellowship (2003), RELACHE Ensemble (2004), an Alphert/Ucross Residency in 2005, a grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts in 2006 and Tate Modern commissioned live sound tracks for Maya Deren’s silent films in 2007.
Ikue currently plays in MEPHISTA with Sylvie Courvoisier and Susie Ibarra, projects with Kim Gordon, the duo PHANTOM ORCHARD with Zeena Parkins and in John Zorn’s Masada a.o.
